Then, 3.5 billion years ago, the first pulse of life sprang from the early primordial soup on the blue stone drifting through space.
The arrow of time carved a single direction through the course of events, and evolution transformed the temporal fluctuation from light to darkness into an inner biological clock. All organisms, whatever place they occupy on the evolutionary tree, are equipped with this clock, and by it they regulate their metabolism and, for those capable of such a thing, their intuition.
We, essentially just a handful from the vast multitude that has flooded this beautiful planet with its rather presumptuous presence, set out, among other things, to prove the playful nature of light and to reveal the beauty spread all around us.
The beginning of the day doesn’t just give the body its starting kick, but it is also lifting us from the warmth of our beds and sending us out, still half-asleep, onto roads and paths, in the hope that we might catch the magical moment of transition.
Few of these moments manage to carry into our photographic attempts the feeling and beauty revealed to us.
The afterimage of this magical moment, when the spirit transforms what hangs suspended before it into a painting in the mind, almost always leaves behind the bitter taste of an unfulfilled expectation when we gaze at the printed result on paper, so to speak.
Cameras, alas, have neither soul nor feeling.
And yet we persist in obeying the command of impulse, chasing after it in the hope that the next shot, surely, surely, will be the one. The unique one. The absolute image.
It resembles, in some way, the myth of Sisyphus and his obsessive devotion to endless effort.
Surely, one day, a beautiful sunrise, with the blood-red crown of the sky, will crown our own fulfilment too, and lend perspective to the plain view of things.
In the end it is this pursuit of the dream that marks the meaning of life in all its forms. And we, its humble servants, remain with hope in our hearts and cameras in our hands.
You, ultimately, will be the judges of our attempt.
