A fairytale city, an old kingdom, and today the capital of Scotland, though the country’s second-largest city after Glasgow.
It is also known as the Athens of the North, partly because of its geography. It spreads across low ground, has an acropolis of its own, and reaches the sea, much like Athens. It also ranks second in tourist numbers within the United Kingdom.
Visitors to its historic centre can see the Royal Mile, a busy street leading to the castle, full of cafés and souvenir shops. One can also enjoy a whisky tasting by buying a ticket, and of course visit the old castle-palace, which now operates as a museum and is illuminated at night in shades of blue and red.
Visitors can also see the school where scenes from the Harry Potter films were shot, or have coffee at The Elephant House, where J. K. Rowling, author of the famous books, used to spend time and write.
During the Christmas season, the Christmas market gives a special colour to the city, which is decorated with colourful lights and ornaments, while people enjoy food and flavours from different parts of the world.
Edinburgh is certainly a destination worth adding to the menu of one’s travel choices.
